Frequently asked questions

A common guideline is six months of living costs, and that’s the runway this calculator looks for. But savings are only half the picture. The other half is how much your business already brings in, because every dollar it earns stretches your savings further.

Enough to cover your living costs, the business’s own costs, sales fees and taxes. That’s your leap number. Runway to Leap looks for your business to reach at least 60% of it, alongside six months of savings, before calling you ready. The rest can grow after you leap.

When you work for yourself, nobody withholds tax from your pay, and in the US you also pay self-employment tax on top of income tax. That’s why your leap number is higher than your current take-home pay. Runway to Leap estimates it for you.

The tax estimate uses US federal rules plus your state rate. If you live elsewhere, you can switch off US self-employment tax, set your own rate and treat the result as a starting point.

No. It’s a planning tool that helps you see your own numbers clearly. Before a big decision, it’s always worth talking to a financial planner or tax professional about your situation.

Find the rate that gets you to your leap number with the Profit Calculator, then turn uneven months into a steady paycheck with the Pay Yourself Planner. Both are part of the Purposepreneur™ Toolkit.
